The Danish startup Pleo won the Startup of the Year, 2020. Templafy – Startup of the Year 2017. And another Danish startup, Soundboks, was among the top three nominated startups in 2020.
In 2022 your startup may be the winner?
The Nordic Grand Finale will be held in Reykjavík, Iceland in February 2022.
July 16th 2021 is the deadline for nominating startups for this Nordic competition. And not only that: Nordic Startup Awards is part of the Global Startup Awards – the biggest independent startup ecosystem competition whose core mission is to find, recognize, and connect the future-shapers of the digital age from all across the world.
”Nordic Startup Awards is a regional part of the world’s largest independent and most prestigious Global Awards for startups. Among the Nordic countries Denmark and Sweden are quite dominating when it comes to win different categories in the Nordic Awards,” says Sofoklis Kyriazakos, Associate Professor at Institute of Business and Technology, Aarhus University, and a member of the Greenbizz project with the task to support startups.
What is Nordic Awards?
The Nordic Awards is one competition out of 11 regional competitions. The other 10 in the Global Awards are Central Eastern Europe, South Europe, Euro-Asia, South East Asia, South Asia, and Central Africa, Western Africa, Eastern Africa, Southern Africa and Northern Africa. In each competition there are several awards in accordance to different criterias.
Sofoklis Kyriazakos explains:
“If your startup wins a Nordic Awards you can continue in the competition like in football by meeting winners from the other regions, and finally a world champion will be appointed.”
Famous Danes have won Nordic Awards
Looking at the categories such as Other Stakeholders of Startups Ecosystems, just like Accelerator/Incubator Programs, Ecosystem Heroes, Founders and many more you will find some well known Danes:
- Jesper Buch – Known from Dragons’ Den (Danish version of the show) – Investor of the Year at Nordic Startup Awards 2017– see the prize winning ceremony here
- Tommy Ahlers – Member of the Danish Parlament – Best Business Angel 2016 – se prize winning ceremony here

Shortlists from these nominations are influenced by the Experts, the Country Partners and Regional HQs (https://nordicstartupawards.com/season-2021).
The list of nominated companies will be published in July and opens for public voting August 2nd (deadline for public votes is September 1st). See details here.
What do you get out of it?
“Recognition and network,”Sofoklis Kyriazakos adds by referring to the Danish startup Valuer – winner of one of the Nordic Awards in 2018. Valuer works with sustainable and innovation economy and has won several prizes after the Nordic Startup Awards.
